Pelvic Floor Therapy: Is It Right For Me?
In our current age of technology and easy access to social media, it’s almost impossible not to stumble across the terms ‘pelvic floor,’ ‘core,’ ‘gut health,’ or any combination of similar words relating to women’s healthcare. This is a good thing, as women’s healthcare continues to be a vastly underserved area of the US healthcare system. However, although these terms have become buzz words we frequently encounter as we doom scroll through Instagram, do we actually appreciate what they really mean? Do we actually know what pelvic floor therapy is? Or do we just think we do because of what we see influencers posting?
As women, we often fall victim to becoming overly complacent with our situations, whether it’s because we’re working full time and making sure the household runs smoothly, or because we’re consumed with childcare and our childrens’ needs. Either way, our needs tend to trail towards the end of our to do list because we feel this infuriating need to put everyone else first and ourselves last. That is, until the kids are grown and out of the house, and before you know it you’re 45 years-old, and it feels like your body has fallen apart and now you’re left to pick up the pieces. Does this sound familiar? If not, read on, because I think this next part will!
I remember hearing my mother say countless times when I was growing up- “Don’t make me laugh, I’ll pee my pants!” I’m sure many of you are no different and share very similar experiences. But those were pivotal moments for me. It made me ask why it has to be that way. Certainly there has to be another option, right? Guess what? There is, and you don’t have to struggle! It’s okay not to be complacent when it comes to pelvic floor dysfunction, because your life doesn’t have to be consumed with knowing where all of the bathrooms are in town, and you don’t need to wear an incontinence pad everyday. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and you don’t have to wait until you’re middle aged or older to get the care you need.
I think what a lot of women forget is that your pelvic health doesn’t start and end with pregnancy. For most women, it starts before that and ends long after that. Young women in their early 20’s can struggle with endometriosis and abdominal pain as severely as a woman in her 60’s can struggle with bowel incontinence, just as a 16 year-old cross country runner can struggle with urinary leakage and a woman in her 70’s can struggle with the annoying effects of being postmenopausal.
At some point in your life, at least one amazing woman you know will struggle with pelvic floor issues, whether due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, injury, illness, or for another reason. If you’re lucky, that woman won’t be you, but it might be someone you love very much, in which case you will likely want them to get the help they deserve.
